Harp Seal Creature Mark

Ideation and Iteration

Physical Characteristics:

- Rotund

- Back Markings

- Big Fore Flippers

- Whiskers

Creature Phrase

The creature phase is a phrase conducted that is integrated into a larger composition. The phrase incorporated was, "A loud bark that can be heard for miles, resting on icy isles, the harp seal between snow piles." This phrase was placed into a geometric scene that maintained the same axial systems that were established in the final mark shown above. Also, incorporating color to showcase more on the creature marks personality.

Objective

Designing a simple, black and white graphic representation of any chosen creature while solely using lines, shapes, and point to capture the creatures tangible and intangible characteristics.

Research

Documented images that contributed to the harp seals physical and associative characteristics. Attributes that stood out to me were the duality in associative traits a harp seal could have, alongside it's rotund and bubbly features.

Associative Characteristics:

- Outgoing

- Buoyancy

- Sociable

- Playful

Sketching

Explored potential directions to take by doing quick sketches and mock ups of the harp seal. Started with exploring different poses, with more "realism" then narrowed down to a few poses that fit the characteristics the harp seal had.

Digital Iterations

After solidifying a solid base for the creature mark through sketching, it was then translated to a digital version on Illustrator. Multiple directions were taken to figure out what poses were working in the seals favor, versus making it more difficult to translate.

Final Mark

The roundness allows for the playful side of the seal to come out. The whiskers can play hand in hand with the sociable nature of the harp seal, while also displaying the prominent feature of it's large whiskers. The inverted colors also allows for the animal to seem heavier, and rounded.

Final Compositions + Zoo Signage + on Products

I also created a branding for a matcha company that is geared towards a younger demographic as the colors and pattern are simplistic and eye-catching as they aren't simply just green. Seals are very popular within Japanese pop culture and so is matcha. So this product could be placed internationally to drive the forces of popular trend sets in multiple countries, especially with matcha.
